How to Replace and install a Harmonic Balancer For Chevy 350 Small Block
I have a 65 Chevy Truck, with a small block 350 from a 72 Chevy Truck. I've been doing some restoration on the truck and noticed the harmonic balancer was wobbling pretty bad.
After doing some reading online, it could be the cause of a lot of issues going on with the motor, and the harmonic balancer is important to the engine crackshaft.
I purchased a new harmonic balancer from Summit Racing. I also purchased the tools needed to remover it and install it. You don't have to take your truck to a repair shop, as a new harmonic balancer and a removal and replacement tool kit is all that you need.
Once I got started, I found that the worst part was removing everything to get to the harmonic balance for my Chevy truck. The removal process was a pain.
When removing the fan, water pump, etc. the removal tool help so much. It took just a few minutes to remove the harmonic balancer, once everything else had been removed.
Installation:
When installing the new harmonic balancer you want to make sure that you align the "key" and the "keyhole" so that the harmonic balancer doesn't rotate around the crankshaft tip.Once you've got everything lined up, all you need is a single bolt to attach the piece to the tip of the crankshaft using 60-pound feet of torque.
Do not use a hammer or try to beat the new harmonic balancer on. Once you line of the lock key, use the tool to tighten it down without any beating or force.
